Welcome to the 2012-13 school year!

August 14, 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As Superintendent of Schools, I want to welcome you to the 2012-13 school year.  I hope that you have found some time for rest and relaxation this summer. I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome and I am excited to help lead this District to even higher achievement and success.  For those of you who might have missed my earlier message when I joined the District in July, I come to my new position with a background as a teacher of high school mathematics, assistant principal, high school principal, curriculum and instruction coordinator, Associate Superintendent and Chief Accountability Officer.  My passion is teaching and learning, ensuring that every student is challenged and supported in receiving the education they deserve to prepare them for the global arena of the 21st century.

On August 28th, we will once again welcome our returning students and families as well as those new to our district.  I urge all parents to visit our website (www.srvusd.net) to view our Framework for Excellence.  This Framework serves as our Strategic Plan and the three principles - Rigor, Relevance and Relationships - guide our work on a daily basis.  Instilling 21st century skills and competencies in our students requires that we change what and how we teach.  The “fewer, clearer, higher” Common Core Standards adopted by California and most of the nation, anchored by the next generation assessments, will raise the bar in California and in SRVUSD to ensure that every student is stretched academically and creatively.  Our staff has begun preparing for implementation of the Common Core Standards with training for all teachers and administrators that will continue throughout this year and beyond.

Our classified staff is working diligently during the last weeks of summer to prepare our schools for another exciting year, and I am truly amazed by the dedicated staff who are committed to serving all of our students and providing the very best in learning opportunities.

Thank you to the parents and community members for your ongoing support for our schools.  Truly, this district would not be as great as it is without your time, energy and financial support.

I look forward to seeing you soon at one of our outstanding schools.

Sincerely,

Mary C. Shelton
Superintendent
