Letter from SRVUSD's new superintendent

Dear San Ramon Valley community,

I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how thrilled I am to have been chosen by the Board of Education as the new superintendent for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. This district has an amazing reputation throughout the state as a district that truly prepares students for the world that awaits them. SRVUSD has been fortunate to have excellent leadership throughout the years, and my goal is to continue to lead this district on a path of excellence and build upon our reputation as one of the best school districts in the country!

Having recently moved, I met a new neighbor and he asked where I worked.  After I replied "San Ramon Valley Unified," he inquired what I taught, and, without thinking, I responded "Math."  As I thought about my response later, I reflected that my reply really speaks to my core---I am, at heart, a teacher first.  Although I have served as a high school principal and assistant principal, director of curriculum and professional development, associate superintendent and finally as chief accountability officer, I will always consider myself a teacher first.  I have had the privilege to serve in diverse educational settings- from a rigorous, college prep private school to working with students and families who are challenged by issues of poverty and language acquisition. I have learned many things, but two stand out:  all families want the very best for their children and all students can learn at high levels when challenged in an environment that embraces and engages them.  My pledge to you is to always, before making any decision, ask myself, "how does this benefit our students?"

I am eager to meet and get to know many of you as I begin to familiarize myself with our schools and community. Please feel free to contact me anytime. Enjoy your summer. I look forward to an excellent school year ahead.

Sincerely,

Mary Shelton, Superintendent
